The Cooked Seed. A Memoir. Anchee Min
First They Killed My Father, a daughter of Cambodia Remembers. Loung Ung
A confronting, uncomfortable, emotional truth. For those of you who want to know the impact of the Pol Pot's Khmer Rouge had on it's people read this. For those of you who question migration, refugee's, asylum seekers read this. Look into Loung's eyes and see courage. My only recommendation is don't read the last chapter in a public forum, such as a train as you will find yourself trying to explain your tears to fellow commuters.
An unbelievable truth.
Philomena. Martin Sixsmith
'Philomena' was meant to be a light entertaining read or so I thought. The story of Philomena Lee searching for her son that she was cruelly forced to put up for adoption after raising Anthony for three years. Without giving away the storyline I will tell you it is about society in the 1950's and 1980's; the social constraints forced upon a changing community; cruel evil lies to protect an entity. It is also about fierce determination; it is painful and tragic at times; it is about the complexity of relationships; sheer love and never losing hope.
And no it is not a light read!
